Tempest is a software program for MS/MS peptide identification by database search. At the time of its original publication (Milloy et al., 2012), Tempest followed the model of existing database search programs SEQUEST (Eng et al., 1994) and MacroSEQUEST Faherty and Gerber, 2010), and incorporated NVIDIA's CUDA API to parallelize computationally intensive peptide-spectrum scoring operations using a graphics processing unit (GPU). Recent development on Tempest has focused on updating the software in two aspects: first, re-implementing the algorithm to utilize OpenCL; and second, introducing features that bring Tempest toward parity with modern search engines such as Comet (Eng et al., 2013) and take advantage of the processing power to which Tempest provides access.
